DVR - Digital Video Recorder
Also called a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) or A PC Video Recorder, it is used to record TV and cable shows.
DVR Overview
A DVR is the newest replacement for the video recorder.
It works in the same way, recording programs you want to watch later, but it does so using a PC, with some additional benefits.
Using the Windows Media Center operating system, you can record all the episodes of your favorite program this season with one click. For example, you can record the whole season of Desperate Housewives with a single click.
With a DVR, any of the programs you record can be burned on a blank DVD, to be played on a regular DVD player.
Plus, with your DVR connected to the internet via a high-speed connection (cable or DSL) you can watch movies online, using your TV as a giant monitor. Netflix has over 2,200 movies that subscribers can watch for free with any subscription.
There are a lot more possibilities. Take a look below in the next section.
DVR Uses
There are a lot of things you can do with a DVR that you could never do with a video recorder.
- Record programs and movies
- Play them back to your TV
- Move your recorded programs to DVD
- Download and watch movies
- Play games using your TV as a monitor
- Share recorded programs with other PCs in your home
